History

The history of Diu Fort is deeply intertwined with the Portuguese colonial ambitions in India. Construction of the fort began in 1535 after a defensive alliance was forged between the Portuguese and Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, against the Mughal emperor Humayun. However, relations soon soured, and the Portuguese seized full control of Diu and dramatically expanded the fort. It became a crucial strategic outpost for the Portuguese, controlling important trade routes and serving as a key naval base. The fort successfully withstood several sieges, most notably the Siege of Diu in 1538 by an Ottoman-Gujarati force and another major siege in 1546. These victories solidified Portuguese dominance in the region for centuries. Diu remained a Portuguese territory until 1961 when it was liberated and integrated into India.
