About Digha

Digha, often referred to as the 'Brighton of the East', is a popular seaside resort town located in the Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal, India. Situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, Digha is renowned for its shallow, sandy beaches and a calming atmosphere, making it a perfect getaway for families and those seeking a tranquil escape from city life. The town is divided into Old Digha and New Digha. Old Digha offers a more traditional beach experience with casuarina groves and local stalls, while New Digha boasts wider, cleaner beaches, modern hotels, and a well-developed promenade. Beyond the beaches, Digha also features several attractions like the Marine Aquarium and Research Centre, various temples, and a scenic park. Its accessibility and affordability make it a favorite destination for weekend trips and short holidays, attracting tourists from West Bengal and neighboring states.

History

Digha's history as a tourist destination dates back to the early 20th century. Originally known as Beerkul, it was 'discovered' by Robert Clive in the 18th century, who is said to have been enchanted by its beauty and described it as the 'Brighton of the East'. However, it remained a relatively obscure fishing village for a long time. It was largely developed into a beach resort during the tenure of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the first Chief Minister of West Bengal, in the 1950s. His vision transformed the serene coastline into an accessible tourist hub, leading to the construction of roads, hotels, and other infrastructure to accommodate the growing influx of visitors. Over the decades, Digha continued to evolve, with the development of New Digha in the late 1990s and early 2000s to manage overcrowding and offer more modern amenities. Today, Digha stands as a testament to this planned development, balancing its natural charm with the demands of a bustling tourist economy.
