History

The history of Deoghar (Baidyanath Dham) is intertwined with ancient Hindu mythology and texts. The name 'Deoghar' literally means 'home of the gods'. Legend has it that Ravana, the demon king, carried the Lingam of Lord Shiva from Kailash with a promise not to place it on the ground until he reached Lanka. However, Lord Vishnu intervened, and Ravana was tricked into placing the Lingam in Deoghar, from which it could not be moved. The temple complex is believed to have been built by Vishwakarma, the divine architect. Historical records indicate that the current temple structure was built by Raja Puran Mal of Giddaur in 1596. Over the centuries, various kings and rulers contributed to its maintenance and expansion. The site gained prominence as a major pilgrimage center during the Maurya and Gupta periods, and its significance has only grown with time. The temple has withstood numerous invasions and natural calamities, symbolizing the enduring faith of its devotees.
