History
Darjeeling's history is deeply intertwined with the British East India Company's expansion in the 19th century. Originally a sparsely populated area belonging to the Kingdom of Sikkim, it was leased to the British in 1835 for use as a sanatorium for soldiers. The fertile land and temperate climate proved ideal for tea cultivation, leading to the rapid establishment of numerous tea estates. The construction of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (the 'Toy Train') in 1881 further connected this remote hill station, facilitating trade and tourism. Darjeeling became a popular summer retreat for the British Raj, developing into a prominent hill station with distinct colonial architecture, schools, and churches. After India's independence in 1947, it became part of West Bengal. The region has experienced various political and social movements, particularly concerning the demand for Gorkhaland, yet it remains a jewel of Indian tourism due to its natural splendor and rich heritage.
