History

Darjeeling's history is deeply intertwined with the British East India Company's expansion in the 19th century. Originally a sparsely populated area belonging to the Kingdom of Sikkim, it was leased to the British in 1835 for use as a sanatorium for soldiers. After India's independence in 1947, it became part of West Bengal.
