Dampa Tiger Reserve, located in the western part of Mizoram on the international border with Bangladesh, is one of India's most significant protected areas and the largest wildlife sanctuary in the state. Spread over an area of approximately 500 square kilometers, this reserve is characterized by its dense tropical evergreen and moist deciduous forests, rugged terrain, and numerous rivers and streams. History

Dampa Tiger Reserve's history as a protected area dates back to 1974 when it was initially declared a wildlife sanctuary. Its strategic location with dense forests and rich biodiversity made it an ideal candidate for higher protection status. Recognizing its ecological importance and the presence of a viable tiger population, the Government of India officially declared Dampa a Tiger Reserve in 1994 under Project Tiger. This declaration aimed to intensify conservation efforts, focusing on tiger preservation and the overall ecological balance of the region. Despite challenges like poaching and habitat encroachment, the reserve has been a cornerstone of wildlife conservation in Mizoram, receiving support from various governmental and non-governmental organizations to safeguard its unique ecosystem.
