History
Dalhousie was established in 1854 by the British as a summer retreat for their officials and troops, named after Lord Dalhousie, the then Governor-General of India. The town was strategically located to provide a cool and salubrious climate, reminiscent of the British Isles. It quickly grew into a popular hill station, with many grand colonial bungalows, churches, and institutions being built during this period. The architecture reflects the Victorian and Scottish influences of the time. Post-independence, Dalhousie continued to be a favored tourist destination, retaining much of its old-world charm. Over the centuries, the region has been inhabited by various local tribes and kingdoms, but its identity as a hill station largely stems from the British era. The town has witnessed significant historical events and has been a silent spectator to India's transformation.
