Visitors can explore the charming 'Mor Chowk' (Peacock Courtyard) with its stunning mosaic peacocks, the 'Badi Mahal' (Garden Palace) with its central garden, and the 'Dilkhush Mahal' (Palace of Joy) for its exquisite murals. A boat ride on Lake Pichola, offering a spectacular view of the palace at sunset, is an absolute must-do.

History

The construction of the City Palace complex was initiated in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II, who founded the city of Udaipur. Faced with the threat of Mughal invasions, he moved his capital from Chittorgarh to the safer location of Udaipur. The site was chosen for its natural defenses, including the surrounding Aravalli hills and the Pichola Lake. Subsequent Maharanas, from Udai Singh II to the 22nd Maharana, added various structures, palaces, and courtyards to the original design, resulting in the massive and impressive complex visible today. Each addition, while distinct, was seamlessly integrated, maintaining a cohesive architectural style. The palace served as the administrative and residential headquarters of the Maharanas of Mewar for over 400 years. The 'Zenana Mahal' (Ladies' Palace) and 'Mardana Mahal' (Gents' Palace) are notable early additions. The blend of medieval, European, and Chinese architecture reflects the changing influences and periods of its expansion, making it a unique historical marvel.
