History

Its fame as the rainiest place on Earth brought it international recognition, though a nearby village, Mawsynram, now slightly surpasses its annual rainfall. Historically, the Khasis were known for their matriarchal society and unique architectural marvels, the Living Root Bridges, which are testaments to their ingenuity and sustainable living practices.
