History

The history of Chandigarh is relatively recent, born out of the partition of India in 1947 when Punjab lost its capital, Lahore, to Pakistan. India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, envisioned a modern city that would symbolize the nation's new forward-looking identity, free from the traditions of the past. The task of designing this ambitious project was initially given to American architect Albert Mayer and Polish-born American planner Maciej Nowicki. Following Nowicki's untimely death, the project was taken over by the highly influential Le Corbusier in 1950. He meticulously planned every aspect of the city, from its grid-like road network and distinct sectors to the iconic government buildings in the Capitol Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction began in the 1950s, with various sectors gradually taking shape. The city was formally inaugurated in 1953. Chandigarh became a Union Territory in 1966 when the state of Punjab was trifurcated into Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, serving as the joint capital for Punjab and Haryana.
