About Chandigarh Architecture Museum
The Chandigarh Architecture Museum stands as a testament to the vision and architectural genius behind the city of Chandigarh itself. Designed by the legendary Le Corbusier, this museum offers an insightful journey into the planning and construction of India's first planned city. It houses an extensive collection of original drawings, sketches, models, and photographs that document the entire process of Chandigarh's creation, from its conceptualization to its realization. Visitors can marvel at the intricate details of Le Corbusier's urban planning, his innovative use of concrete, and the philosophical underpinnings of his design principles. The museum not only showcases the architectural marvels but also narrates the story of the socio-economic and political context that led to the birth of this iconic city, making it a crucial stop for architects, urban planners, historians, and anyone interested in modern Indian history.
History
The Chandigarh Architecture Museum was established to preserve and showcase the invaluable archives related to the planning and construction of Chandigarh. The city itself was conceived in the aftermath of India's partition in 1947, when former Punjab capital Lahore went to Pakistan, leaving the Indian state without a capital. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, envisioned a new, modern capital, a symbol of a new India. He commissioned the renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier in 1950 to undertake this monumental task. Le Corbusier, along with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry, and Jane Drew, led a team of Indian architects and planners to design Chandigarh from scratch. The museum was created to house the vast collection of original documents, drawings, and models produced during this period, ensuring that future generations could study and appreciate the meticulous planning and innovative architectural solutions that went into building this 'City Beautiful'. It serves as a living archive, continuously expanding its collection to further enrich the narrative of Chandigarh's unique architectural heritage.
