History

The history of Belur Math is deeply intertwined with the lives and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and his foremost disciple, Swami Vivekananda. Following Sri Ramakrishna's passing in 1886, his monastic disciples, under Swami Vivekananda's leadership, established the Ramakrishna Math. The present site of Belur Math was acquired in 1897 and consecrated in 1898 with the sacred relics of Sri Ramakrishna. Swami Vivekananda envisioned a Math that would embody the universal message of his master, a place where all faiths could find a common ground. The construction of the main temple, designed by Swami Vijnanananda, a monastic disciple and engineer, commenced in 1935 and was consecrated in 1938. The unique architectural style reflects Swami Vivekananda's vision of 'harmony of religions,' incorporating elements from various religious architectures to signify that all paths lead to the same divine truth. Over the decades, Belur Math has grown to become a vast complex, encompassing several temples, a museum, a monastery, and educational institutions, fulfilling the mission of spreading Ramakrishna's teachings and serving humanity globally.
