History

Belur and Halebidu rose to prominence as significant centers of the Hoysala Empire, which ruled parts of South India from the 10th to the 14th centuries. Belur, initially known as Velapuri, served as the early capital. It was under the patronage of King Vishnuvardhana that the magnificent Chennakesava Temple was consecrated in 1117 AD, commemorating his victory over the Cholas. This temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, took over a century to complete and is renowned for its star-shaped plan and intricate sculptures. Halebidu, then known as Dorasamudra, later became the Hoysala capital. The Hoysaleswara Temple, built during the same period, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is equally spectacular, although it was never fully completed. Both temples suffered damage during the Muslim invasions of the 14th century, particularly by Malik Kafur's army. Despite the ravages of time and conflict, their architectural grandeur and artistic integrity largely survived, leaving behind an invaluable legacy of Hoysala art and culture that continues to draw scholars and tourists alike. The sites provide a vivid narrative of medieval South Indian history, religion, and artistic expression.
