About Bekal Fort

Bekal Fort, a majestic sentinel on the shores of the Arabian Sea, is the largest fort in Kerala, India. Its colossal laterite walls, rising dramatically from the beach, offer breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline. The fort's strategic location, jutting into the sea, made it a crucial defensive outpost. Visitors can explore the intricate network of observation towers, bastions, and a water tank, all remnants of a bygone era. The fort is not just a historical marvel; its serene surroundings, dotted with palm groves and a pristine beach, make it a popular spot for photography, picnicking, and enjoying spectacular sunsets. The architectural grandeur combined with the natural beauty creates an unforgettable experience for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Its unique keyhole-shaped structure further adds to its allure, making it a truly exceptional example of ancient military architecture.

History

The origin of Bekal Fort is largely attributed to Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi, who rebuilt and fortified it in the mid-17th century, around 1650 AD. However, archaeological findings suggest that a fort structure existed even prior to this, possibly under the Kolathiri Rajas. The fort's strategic importance grew significantly under Shivappa Nayaka's rule, as it served as a vital defense against the burgeoning power of the Marathas and other regional kingdoms. Later, it fell into the hands of Hyder Ali of Mysore and subsequently Tipu Sultan. After Tipu Sultan's defeat in the Anglo-Mysore wars, Bekal Fort came under the control of the British East India Company. Each successive ruler contributed to the fort's robust defense mechanisms and architectural style, leaving behind a rich tapestry of history embedded within its weathered walls. The fort stands as a testament to the numerous power struggles and strategic importance of the Malabar coast through centuries.
