About Basilica of Bom Jesus
The Basilica of Bom Jesus, located in Old Goa, is an iconic landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its exquisite Baroque architecture and its profound religious significance. This magnificent church holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier, a revered Jesuit missionary. The basilica's facade, a compelling blend of Doric, Corinthian, and composite styles, is crafted from black and laterite brick, offering a striking visual contrast. Inside, visitors are met with a grand, yet serene atmosphere, characterized by ornate altars, gilded panels, and beautiful frescoes that narrate biblical stories. The altar dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, adorned with intricate silverwork and a large statue, is a particular focal point, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike. Beyond its religious importance, the Basilica serves as a powerful symbol of Goa's rich colonial past and its enduring connection to Portuguese heritage, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring the region.
History
Construction of the Basilica of Bom Jesus began in 1594 and was completed in 1605, marking it as one of India's oldest churches. Its foundational stone was laid by the then Governor of Goa, Francisco da Gama. The church's design is attributed to the Italian Jesuit architect, Giovanni Battista Fiamminghi, although local craftsmen carried out much of the work. The Basilica gained immense prominence following the transfer of the relics of St. Francis Xavier to the church in 1622 from the College of St. Paul. These well-preserved relics, encased in a silver casket, have been a source of veneration for centuries, attracting devotees from across the globe. Periodically, the sacred relics are exposed for public veneration during grand exhibitions, an event that draws millions of pilgrims. Over the centuries, the Basilica has withstood the test of time, undergoing various restorations to maintain its structural integrity and historical grandeur, cementing its status as a vital piece of Goan and global heritage.
