About Anandpur Sahib

Anandpur Sahib, nestled in the picturesque Shivalik Hills of Punjab, is a revered pilgrimage site for Sikhs worldwide. It holds immense historical and spiritual significance as the birthplace of the Khalsa, the collective body of initiated Sikhs, founded by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. The town is marked by several gurdwaras (Sikh temples), each narrating a chapter from the lives of the Sikh Gurus. Beyond its religious importance, Anandpur Sahib offers a serene landscape and a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Punjab. The annual Hola Mohalla festival, a vibrant display of martial arts and traditional valor, draws devotees and tourists alike, transforming the town into a spectacle of color and devotion. Visitors can experience the tranquility of the gurdwaras, learn about Sikh history, and soak in the spiritual atmosphere that permeates every corner of this sacred town.

History

Anandpur Sahib was founded in 1665 by the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, on land purchased from the ruler of Bilaspur. Originally named Chak Nanaki, it was later renamed Anandpur Sahib, meaning 'City of Bliss.' It became a significant center for the Sikh faith under Guru Tegh Bahadur and later under his son, Guru Gobind Singh. The most pivotal moment in Anandpur Sahib's history occurred in 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa, a spiritual and martial brotherhood which transformed the Sikh community. This event was preceded by a period of intense religious persecution and the need to defend Sikh values. The town also witnessed numerous battles between the Sikhs and the Mughal forces, standing as a symbol of Sikh resilience and bravery. Its gurdwaras, such as Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib, are built on sites that commemorate these historical events and the sacrifices made by the Gurus and their followers.
