The practice of pilgrimage to Amarnath is believed to be centuries old, though its organized form gained prominence with the establishment of the Amarnathji Shrine Board. The cave was reportedly rediscovered by a Muslim shepherd named Buta Malik in the 15th century, whose descendants continue to receive a share of the offerings. The annual pilgrimage, known as the 'Amarnath Yatra', has faced numerous challenges over time, including harsh weather and security concerns, yet continues to draw lakhs of devotees who embark on this spiritual journey through the rugged Himalayan landscape.

The nearest major railway station is Jammu Tawi (JAT), from where pilgrims can take buses or taxis to Srinagar and then to the base camps. Road access is available to Pahalgam and Baltal, from where the challenging trek to the cave begins.
