About Amaravati

Amaravati, the envisioned capital city of Andhra Pradesh, India, is a city with a rich historical past and an ambitious future. Situated on the banks of the Krishna River, it is being developed as a world-class smart city, blending ancient heritage with modern infrastructure. The name 'Amaravati' itself harks back to an ancient city that was a center of Buddhist art and learning. The city's planned development emphasizes sustainability, green spaces, and a high quality of life for its residents. While still under construction, Amaravati offers a glimpse into a meticulously planned urban landscape, featuring futuristic architecture and a commitment to preserving its historical and cultural roots. It aims to be a hub for education, business, and tourism, drawing visitors with its innovative design and cultural attractions.

History

The ancient Amaravati has a profound history dating back over two millennia. It was the capital of the Satavahana dynasty, one of the most powerful ancient Indian kingdoms, from the 2nd century BCE to the 3rd century CE. During this period, Amaravati flourished as a significant center for Buddhism, boasting the Great Stupa of Amaravati, a monumental structure adorned with exquisite sculptures depicting the life of Buddha. This Stupa, sadly largely destroyed, was a testament to the rich Buddhist artistry and patronage in the region. After the Satavahanas, the region was controlled by various dynasties, including the Ikshvakus, Vishnukundinas, and Eastern Chalukyas, each leaving their mark on the cultural and architectural landscape. The modern Amaravati is a conscious effort to revive the glory of its namesake, drawing inspiration from its historical prominence as a cultural and administrative hub. The discovery of numerous Buddhist relics and sculptures in the area continues to shed light on its significant past.
