About Akshardham

Akshardham, a spiritual and cultural complex in Delhi, is a marvel of architecture and a testament to Indian art, culture, and traditions. Dedicated to Swaminarayan, this sprawling 100-acre campus is an experience in itself, offering visitors a glimpse into India's rich heritage through various exhibitions, boat rides, and light and sound shows. The main temple, built entirely of intricately carved pink sandstone and white marble, is the heart of the complex, showcasing stunning craftsmanship and detailed sculptures. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Akshardham serves as a profound spiritual center, promoting values of peace, harmony, and selfless service. It's not just a temple; it's a journey through ancient Indian history, wisdom, and the lives of great saints, designed to inspire and educate visitors of all ages and backgrounds. The serene environment, coupled with its grandeur, makes it a must-visit destination for those seeking spiritual solace and an appreciation for remarkable artistry.

History

The idea of Akshardham was conceived by Yogiji Maharaj, the spiritual head of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, in 1968. However, its realization came under the leadership of his successor, Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The construction of Akshardham in Delhi began in 2000, following extensive planning and design, and involved the dedication of thousands of artisans, volunteers, and skilled craftsmen. It was inaugurated on November 6, 2005, after five years of monumental effort. The architectural style draws inspiration from ancient Indian temple architecture, particularly the traditional Nagara style, with not a single piece of steel used in its construction. The entire complex was built according to the principles of Vastu Shastra and Pancharatra Shastra. It stands as a symbol of 10,000 years of Indian culture, depicting the lives and teachings of Swaminarayan, as well as other great sages and saints of India, through various exhibits and artistic representations. Its rapid construction and breathtaking scale made it a world record holder for the largest comprehensive Hindu temple.
