History

The history of Agatti Island, like much of Lakshadweep, is intertwined with early maritime trade routes and Islamic influences. While concrete historical records are sparse, it is believed that the islands were settled by people from the Indian mainland centuries ago. The first recorded mention of the Lakshadweep islands, including Agatti, dates back to the 7th century when Arab traders visited the region, leading to the gradual spread of Islam among the local population. The Chera dynasty and later the Kolathiri Rajas of Kannur held sway over the islands before they came under the control of the Arakkal House of Cannanore. In the 18th century, the islands were ceded to Tipu Sultan and subsequently came under British rule. Post-independence, Lakshadweep became a Union Territory of India. Agatti's strategic location and the establishment of its airport in the late 20th century further cemented its importance as a gateway, facilitating tourism and connectivity for the entire archipelago while preserving its unique cultural and environmental heritage.
